I strongly suspect that people who start off with a strong belief in a Higher Power and lose it when that Power fails them are actually recognizing that they have believed only in themselves. The god they whined to by day and night was their own ego. That is usually the first step in the search for the Spirit of God that cannot be constrained by mere human thought.
